Gary Rue has been playing and writing since February of 1964 when he saw the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan show; he 'borrowed' his Dad's guitar for 6 years. In 1981, upon achieving (arguably) some degree of success in the music business, he began writing seriously for the stage. Over 1000 songs later, Mr. Rue has composed somewhere in the neighborhood of 70 pieces of musical theater, many of them for SteppingStone Theatre For Youth Development of St. Paul. THE STINKY CHEESE MAN, a piece he coauthored with Kent Stephens, has recently completed an international tour with The Dallas Children's Theater.

Gary Rue PRESS NOTES:
"…trades on a good sense of how to make the subtleties count."
(Twin Cities) City Pages
"…vibrant, catchy, exciting melodies."
San Francisco) Bay Area Express
"…graceful, plaintive melodies. Gary's music is…very melodic, very beautiful."
Minneapolis Star Tribune
" …performs a wide variety of original compositions rooted in rock, pop, country, jazz and ethnic: sort of Roy Orbison meets Mose Allison meets Chet Baker meets Curt Weill."
"Celtic Music Wizard"
-Minneapolis Star Tribune
....Performing music from Ireland, Scotland, England, France and Northern Spain on a dazzling array of wind-powered instruments, including flutes, whistles, concertina, many bagpipes and voice.
"In my little black book of musicians and writers there's an entire page dedicated to Laura MacKenzie. Few musicians are persistent and talented enough to become accomplished at more than one instrument in a lifetime. It's common to find a great fiddle player that 'sort of' plays mandolin and guitar. Thus, 'multi-instrumentalist' has become a casual term for a musical jack-of all-trades.

The repertoire also includes traditional bluegrass standards (songs by Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, Jim and Jesse McReynolds, etc.) and songs by artists from other musical genres (such as “Blue Skies” by Irving Berlin). We'll discuss the basic structure of the music, show some great videos of jazz performances and help to provide a peak behind the curtain. These discussions will help any listener uncover new ways to enjoy all types of music.
The jam session welcomes all musicians to perform and all people to enjoy! The Driftless Jazz Collective is guitarists Dave Ware and Ted Parrish, drummer Jason Smith and multi-instrumentalist Tom Gullion. Bring your axe!

7pm, Greenman Music Hall - inside the Viroqua Public Market, $10
Street Beat Blues kicks off the festival outside at the Viroqua Food Coop. There'll be food and blues to start the weekend right! Ted Parrish and his trio from Chicago will kick things into the right groove. Jim Schaffer brings his own flavor of the blues. It will be a great event!
Street Beat Blues is also a green event. One of our sponsors, Prarie Solar, will be providing electricity for the event with its mobile solar unit. This unit collects light from the sun and converts it to electricity. Sustainable, organic meets the blues. What a perfect Gumbo!
Featured artist Davu Seru shares his experiences traveling to Ghana with us at 3pm. VIVA Art Gallery is hosting this great event. Davu recently traveled to Ghana and made some startling discoveries. Come hear them!
David Cooper and his wife Kelly de Haven open the evening concert. David's an amazing trumpet player and his wife is a similarly great singer.
The Tom Gullion Quartet headlines the evening. They recently has great success at the Freedomfest festival in Madison. Come hear energetic, inspired jazz from some of the region's best players. Tim Whalen has built a great reputation as a name to watch and will be playing piano. Karyn Quinn joins them from the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse.

Project Fourthstream with Davu Seru, Rich MacDonald
7pm, Greenman Music Hall - inside the Viroqua Public Market, $10
One of the perennial favorites of the festival, vocalist Christie Knapp brings her elegant, always-swinging style to the Driftless Cafe for an awesome jazz brunch. Come join her and guitarist Mike James for a great, mellow start to the day.
The Jfar Coretet is probably the hardest working band in the area. This band has been rehearsing, growing and expanding their sound for the last couple of years. It's always great fun to follow where they're leading us! This time around will be no exception. They're combining some amazing poetry with their improvised ensemble. This is where the Beat generation meant to arrive.
Members of the INTOIT ensemble will open the evening concert. This ensemble attracts some of the best drama and comic talent in the area and always amazes us with new, fresh ways of performing.
Project Fourthstream, the duo of pianist/composer William Neil and woodwind specialist Tom Gullion will take to the stage. This latest work of the group extends the "digital acoustic" soundscapes that William Neil has been producing. He'll be hot off a tour of New York state and Chicago for this performance. Featured guest artist Davu Seru
monday May 26
Ted Parrish Trio featuring Catherine Hall Parrish
Christie Knapp
Tom Gullion Quartet featuring Geoff Lowe and Rich MacDonald
1pm, Greenman Music Hall - inside the Viroqua Public Market, $10
The final event of the festival is all about having a great time! Great food, great atmosphere, great music! Organic Valley, one of our corporate sponsors, has donated some great food items. There will also be a host of local vendors providing that perfect lunch.
Ted Parrish features his talented wife, Catherine Hall Parrish. Their work together is always brilliant.
Christie Knapp returns this time with a full jazz quartet and will certainly delight you with some great new material she's presenting at the festival.
Tom Gullion's Quartet is seeking to repeat the exciting music they performed at last year's fest. Bassist Geoff Lowe is coming up from Chicago and drummer Rich MacDonald is joining them from Minnesota. Tim Whalen performs again on piano. It is certain to "rock out" - in a swingin' sort of way.

Made up of Iowa natives David Huckfelt and Benson Ramsey, up-and-coming duo The Pines actually began their musical partnership in Arizona, where they both lived in a Mexican barrio and first began playing together. Committing to a musical career, they returned to their Midwestern roots and moved to Minneapolis, a city that has launched many folk and rock acts from Bob Dylan to The Replacements to The Jayhawks. Like these Twin Cities legends, The Pines weave together many musical styles to create their own unique sound that is hip and haunting. The son of Greg Brown’s producer and sideman Bo Ramsey, Benson was reared on folk and blues music and continues to let those influences shine, even on louder electric songs. David also has a deep love for traditional music, and together the two of them craft music that evokes the ancient while incorporating newer rock and pop grooves. Both strong writers and musicians, David and Benson have distinct voices that complement each other, causing audiences and critics alike to tout them as a powerful young force in American roots music. Although they have not been touring long, they have already shared the stage with the likes of Jolie Holland, The Arcade Fire, Kelly Joe Phelps and Spider John Koerner. The Pines’ highly anticipated new CD Sparrows in the Bell was produced by Bo Ramsey and recorded in Minneapolis. Featuring dark, poetic originals and a couple surprising covers, the album will be their first on world-renowned roots label Red House Records. Their first self-titled record was released on Trailer Records and features guest artist Dave Moore. Following the release of their new album, The Pines will be touring extensively across the country.

JOE & VICKI PRICE!

Saturday August 9th
Greenman Music Hall
8pm

website
Right from jump street, the electrifying sound of Joe Price hits you in all the places you live: The insistent, driving rhythm chops, the taproot boot-stomps, the splintering, thrilling slide runs up the fret board, and that voice—a keening, haunting miracle seemingly channeled from the ghosts of past masters—all add up to a one-man blues tornado who can pack, command and wring-out a dance-floor with the authority of an eight-piece showband.
And while Price inhabits classic blues standards as if they were favorite shirts, his own deep and varied bag of original music is so formidable—so thoroughly imbued with life’s mysteries—that noted Grammy-award nominated singer/songwriter Greg Brown has long referred to Joe as “the Buddha.”
Clearly, this man was born to play the blues.
Growing up in a remote rural setting easily could turn out to be a severe disadvantage to a fledgling musician. But for Vicki (Ewing) Price, the particular mix-and-match, peek-a-boo forays into country, blues and R&B-influenced gospel afforded by her formative years in Waukon, Iowa circumscribed a crucible that would forge a distinctive, blues-belting guitarist who is as earthy, unique and seductive as a greenhouse orchid.
Of course, the intersection/collision of Vicki’s life with that of incendiary, mercurial Iowa Blues Hall of Fame legend Joe Price more than 25 years ago accelerated the process, but—make no mistake here—the creative, musical impact of this most-fortuitous of romantic pairings was and remains a bustling two-way street in nearly every way imaginable, and the artistic achievements of both partners are irrevocably intertwined.
The on-stage interplay between Joe and Vick (which is as natural and copacetic as it is off-stage) makes that connection clear, and the mutual admiration society is well-tended.

A One-Man Band playing over 25 instruments. The lyrics are word heavy stories with an underlying message usually about political or environmental justice, Metaphysical epiphanies or frustrations and blowing off the suburban teen angst, bad love, & trashy rap star negative vibe mentality saturating today’s music. “I have bad days like anyone else. Michael Whisler is young self-taught acoustic fingerstyle guitarist and songwriter. He composes for both 12 and 6 string guitars with dynamic power and speed while drawing from American folk, blues and classical music.
His tunes range from ripping fast paced instrumentals to slower more emotional ballads and even dissonant free time melodies. He also blends a unique bottleneck tone to some of his compositions which utilize alternate tunings.
Although Michael is mainly a solo guitarist he does throw in his low warm vocals to some of the tunes, while all along never noticing there isn’t a band backing him up.
