Harmonious Wail draws from the rich influence of the European gypsy musicians, most notably Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli who created and developed what came to be known as Gypsy Swing. What sets the Wail apart from other wonderful talent in this growing genre is the vocal excellence of Maggie Delaney-Potthoff. The intoxicating arrangements and the shear joy the Wail brings to every performance is downright addictive. "In the United States the most avid and talented champions of this style have to be Madison, Wisconsin's Harmonious Wail, whose latest CD appropriately titled Gypsy Swing, provides a soulful overview of the genre..." - Dirty Linen. Specializing in the style of Django Reinhardt, The Wail is made of mandolin, guitar, bass, and killer female vocals with snare percussion. The Wail consistently receives an excellent response from audience members, and reengagements from presenters. The band has toured throughout the United States and Europe over the past 17 years and in October '04 they travelled to Taiwan for a 2-week tour.

Bill Isles LIVE

returning to

the Greenman Music Hall

8pm

please join us for this special evening with Bill Isles... the concert will be recored live, part of a planned live album of selected small town concerts.  Our cheers will live on forever!

Since Bill Isles returned to performing in 2000, he has become one of the most well known and highly respected singer/songwriters in the Midwest and has begun to headline shows nationally.

His songs are poetic reflections of life experiences and often explore adventurous spiritual courses. Admittedly a romantic, many of his lyrics describe emotional and sensual encounters.  Just when you conclude that a song is about Michelangelo’s first visit to scope out the project at the Sistine Chapel, you start to realize that, perhaps, this is also Isles' perception of entering the “chapel” of his audience. But then, again, it also hints at the intimate interaction of lovers. It is this multi-layering that has drawn fans to listen over and over again.

- "The Shores of My Hometown" named one of the top albums of 2006 by WVPE in Elkhart, IN and WXOU in Auburn Hill, MI !!

"Bill Isles' performance style and songs are as comfortable as your favorite blanket. You get wrapped up in them and don't want to leave the warmth they create." Al Kniola - WVPE-FM (NPR), Elkhart, IN (in reaction to "The Shores of My Hometown")

-SAVE THE DATE!-

Michael Young is a fingerstyle guitarist who plays both the six and twelve string guitar with driving rhythm and groove, and he carries that bouncy and energetic groove from powerful and compelling compositions to soulful ballads. Moving from daunting and alarming to lighthearted and idiosyncratic instrumentals, Michael takes advantage of the guitar's possibilities by combining standard and alternate tunings with a mix of slide guitar into his playing.

"Minnesota-bred Young is a world-class picker who shines on 6 and 12-string guitar. There's something of the Leo Kottke style in Young's playing, but he also has his own sound, which draws from folk, rock, blues, country and classical. Young knows his way
around the guitar classics but also has a bag full of originals that jump. Listen for songs such as Plinko and Indio." --Jim Beal, San Antonio Express News

The Foghorn Stringband, if you ask me, is one of the greatest new things in old-time music. all they have to do is play, and the power surges straight through your own chest. they are supertight, are major monster players, and they don't do anything weird to the music -- they let their own musicality and the tunes speak for themselves. -- Molly Tenenbaum, The Old Time Herald

It’s All About The Music

Bruce and Julie recorded their first jam session together on January 6th, 1993 in a church in Chicago. With Bruce playing an acoustic guitar and Julie on a 5gallon pail they discovered their desire to create music together out of anything and everything around them. That desire fueled their relationship as it grew out of this musical love they shared and keeps them grounded in the music they create still to this day.

Punk Rock Meets Poetry

Bruce Hecksel’s primary instrument is acoustic guitar. In addition to intense study in many styles from fingerstlye, flamenco, classical, jazz, flat picking, and folk, he studied concert piano, choral compositions and plays bass guitar and percussion on stage. But Bruce started his guitar adventure in a punk rock band named Be Safe Be Seen. At a Canadian music festival in 1991 his electric guitar and amp were stolen and he was left with only his acoustic guitar, which he took as a sign and never played an electric guitar again.

As lyricist and lead vocalist of Patchouli, Julie’s background is in words. She began reciting poetry when she was seven. She walked around with her steno notepad and recorded all her observations of her young life. Dabbling in violin, drums, and trombone throughout school she worked many of her poems into acapella pieces that she and friends would perform.
